Nelson’s Green Brier Whiskey was an old Tennessee Whiskey brand founded by Charles Nelson in 1860, produced at the distillery of the same name. In it’s day it was one of the most successful brands in the state, producing two million bottles a year by 1885. Statewide prohibition hit Tennessee in 1909, and the distillery was forced to shutter. But the arc of history, though long and strange, tends to loop back around, and the distillery was resurrected by Nelson’s great-great-great-grandsons Charlie and Andy Nelson, opening its doors in 2014 in Nashville, Tennessee. They initially bottled sourced whiskey under the Belle Meade Bourbon label, as they worked on perfecting the wheated mashbill recipe (unique among Tennessee distilleries) employed by their ancestor. Once that was settled, they had to patiently wait while the whiskey aged, a minimum of two years. 

Being a Tennessee whiskey, Nelson’s Green Brier utilizes the charcoal-based Lincoln County Process, filtering their whiskey through a mellowing bed of sugar maple charcoal. The result is a mellow but tasty whiskey, with a nose of dough, baking spice, and toasted grains. The palate opens with sweet wood sugars and further sips reveal oak, leather, cinnamon, and vanilla. The finish closes the show on dry oak, white peppercorn, and sweet dough. Bottled at 45.5% abv.
